SMTP connections may be rejected by some servers due to ambiguous "HELO" value

Status:Closed

Impact Matrix:

*
LowImpactHigh
Category:Functionality (Server Side)
MIDAS Versions Affected:4.00 - 4.11
Browsers Affected:Microsoft Internet Explorer Microsoft Edge Mozilla Firefox Google Chrome Apple Safari Opera
Details:An issue has been discovered with the Net::SMTP Perl module (which MIDAS uses to send email over SMTP) which can cause the HELO part of SMTP transactions to be sent as "EHLO localhost.localdomain".
"localhost.localdomain" violates the relevant standards (specifically RFC5321), which can cause some SMTP server/relays to reject the incoming connection and believe the connection is a spamming bot.
Symptoms:SMTP connections being blocked, and/or warnings about the server where your MIDAS resides showing "signs of being infected with a spam sending trojan, malicious link or some other form of botnet"
Workaround:Whitelist in your SMTP server, the IP address of the server where your MIDAS system resides
Resolution:Fixed for v4.11 if installed/updated after 21st January 2016. MIDAS will now force setting a valid HELO value for servers which don't explicitly set it

LowImpactHigh
Category:Functionality (Server Side)
MIDAS Versions Affected:4.08 - 4.10
Browsers Affected:Microsoft Internet Explorer Microsoft Edge Mozilla Firefox Google Chrome Apple Safari Opera
Details:If the "Client" booking field has been disabled so that it doesn't appear on the Add Bookings screen, and you modify a booking request, a "Booking Request Approved" notification may be sent to the user who processed the request, as booking itself will have no client associated with it. Instead, in such instances, these notifications should not be sent.

Similarly, if directly approving a pending booking request and the request is client-less, a "Booking Approved" email notification may be generated, but will fail as it won't have a valid recipient.
Workaround:Ensure that the "Client" booking field is visible and required, to ensure that all bookings have a client associated with them

LowImpactHigh
Category:Functionality (Client Side)
MIDAS Versions Affected:4.05
Browsers Affected:Apple Safari (Standalone / Web Clip Mode)
Details:When adding MIDAS as a Home Screen icon to your iPad, opening MIDAS via this icon may not allow you to easily enter your email/password details on the login screen
Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Add a Home Screen icon for MIDAS to your iPad
  2. Start MIDAS via the Home Screen icon
Workaround:A number of workarounds exist:

Method 1:
1) Once MIDAS loads, close the onscreen keyboard
2) Double-Tap the email field (the on screen keyboard reappears)
3) You should then be able to type into the email field

Method 2:
An alternative workaround is to tap the password field, enter some characters, then tap the email field, after which you should be able to enter into this field.

Method 3:
A further alternative workaround is to login to MIDAS via the regular Safari browser on your iPad, and select the "Remember Me" option on the login screen. Then, when you next load MIDAS via the Home Screen icon you've added, your login details should be filled in already (so you won't need to type them in). Additionally, if you also select the "Auto-Login" box on this screen, MIDAS should log you in each time you access it via the Home Screen icon you've added.
